A
socio dance- drama, Theeyattu is performed as part of the 'Kalam' or
'Dhooli Chitram', ritual drawing with coloured powders.
Enacted in some Bhagavathi temples of Thiruvalla,
Kottayam, Tripunithura and neighbouring
areas, the ritual starts with the invocation of Ganapati, Siva and
Saraswathi, after which the performer dons a crown smaller but similar to
the one used in Mudiyettu.
'Unnis', a small group of temple bound communities, are the painters and
performers of Theeyattu. It is performed as an offering every Friday at
Pallippurathu Kaavu, 1 km south of Kottayam
town.
