Id
ul-Fitr, popularly known as Ramadan (but ideally pronounced Ramzan), falls
in the seventh month of the lunar year (January- February) and is a major
festival of the Muslims of Kerala.
Throughout this month, Muslims observe a day-long fast. Purification of
the body and soul is the main purpose of this religious rite.
The festival of Id ul-Fitr festival begins with the sighting of the
crescent moon on the western horizon and with that the fasting ends.
The main activity of the festival is the distribution of food to the poor
and needy. In the morning, devotees proceed to the mosque or Id-Gali to
attend the congregational prayer led by the Imam.
